About Us

The Northern Sonoma County Fire Protection District protects over 263,727 acres in Northern Sonoma County. We serve Knights Valley, Franz Valley, Alexander Valley, Chalk Hill, Dry Creek Valley, the Geysers, Geyserville, parts of unincorporated Healdsburg and Lake Sonoma.

In 2023, the Northern Sonoma County Fire Protection District finalized the annexations of the following County Service Area 40 areas:

  • Fitch Mountain (outside of Healdsburg city limits)
  • Lower Dry Creek Valley to Sweetwater Springs Road
  • Mill Creek Road/Community
  • Bailhache Avenue and Rio Lindo Avenue
  • The Geysers

The goal of the District is to achieve the highest level of prevention and suppression of fire and the protection of life, property, and the environment within the limits of the Northern Sonoma County Fire Protection District, the County of Sonoma, State of California and any contract area.

We pride ourselves in specializing in rural fire and emergency services, embracing preparedness and prevention, and do not believe in a “one size fits all” approach to providing services. The District is governed by a five member board and is independent from the County of Sonoma Board of Supervisors.

The District is established under and governs according to the laws of the State of California. The Northern Sonoma County Fire Protection District is a special district of the County of Sonoma and for the State of California. It primarily receives funds to operate from taxes generated from property within the District, local and state tax funds, and grants.

The Fire District is authorized to perform the following:

  1. Fire code enforcement
  2. Fire suppression
  3. Investigation and arrest of individuals suspected of starting fires
  4. Provision of Emergency Medical Services (EMS)
  5. Fire risk reduction including vegetation management
  6. Engage residents and community groups to increase awareness, prevention and preparedness efforts

Firefighters are sworn members of the Fire District and have the following authority:

  1. Participate in a wide range of emergency and rescue activities, including EMS, extrication and heavy rescue
  2. Perform fire suppression duties, including the suppression of structural, aircraft, wildland and other types of fires
