Forestry Technician (Part-Time)

Position Description

The Part-Time Forestry Technician position is a part-time position. Depending on experience, the Part-Time Forestry Technician will be placed at the entry level as a Forestry Technician 1 (FT1) or the more experienced level as a Forestry Technician 2 (FT2). This position is responsible for operating power and hand tools to limb up trees; remove small trees, bushes and other vegetation; move cut vegetation to a chipper and feed vegetation into the chipper. Employee must be able to follow directions and work diligently in the implementation of fuels reduction projects. This position may also involve participation in pile and broadcast burning. The work schedule is 10-hour days, 2-3 days per week. 

This position is ideal for students looking for weekend or part-time work, or for someone looking for a second job.

Minimum Qualifications

Must be at least 18 years old at the time of employment, valid California Class C driver’s license or higher, and high school diploma or equivalent. Forestry Technician 2 requires at least three months of full-time equivalent experience as a fuels crew member or similar position. No experience is required for the Forestry Technician 1 position.

Highly Desirable Qualifications

Forestry or natural resources education and/or related experience. Experience as a volunteer, part-time, and/or full-time at the fire fighter or higher rank. Wildland fire ecology, use, and management experience and education, including understanding wildland fuel loading, wildland fire effects, and wildland fire monitoring. Other desirable qualifications include S-130, S-190, ICS-100, L-180, and IS-700.

Physical Requirements

This position requires frequent standing, sitting, walking, talking, and hearing. In addition, this position requires use of hands and fingers to handle objects, operate tools or controls, and reach with hands and arms. Employee will frequently be required to lift and/or move objects up to 50 pounds and occasionally move objects up to 175 pounds. Specific vision abilities include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. Employee must maintain the requisite strength, stamina, and agility necessary to hike steep, uneven terrain while carrying equipment. Prior to employment, applicant is required to satisfactorily complete the Moderate Duty Work Capacity Test and a 50-pound lift test.

Working Conditions and Risk Factors

Work is performed primarily in forested wildland settings in all weather conditions, including temperature extremes, while carrying heavy equipment. This position requires use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, chaps, and gloves. This position requires travel to remote and isolated areas and hiking on extreme terrain, such as hills, slopes, grades and wetlands. The terrain will present numerous slipping and tripping hazards such as rocks and tree roots, mossy stones or logs, mud and water, or loose gravel. Employee will frequently work near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places. Employee may frequently be exposed to long periods of sunlight; extreme heat/fire; wet and/or humid conditions; smoke, fumes or airborne particles; vibration; and noise. There is a risk of death or injury from falling trees and natural hazards.
